Queiroz opens Team Melli doors for Dejagah

  • Tehran: Iran coach Carlos Queiroz has once again opened Team Melli doors for Iranian-German striker Ashkan Dejagah saying he can join the team if proves himself.

The 24-year-old struts his stuff for Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg and had received a similar offer from former Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi to play in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™.

“Dejagah could join us if he proves himself. We sent one of our staff to Germany to see Wolfsburg match. Every Iranian player who plays outside Iran has the right to join his country’s team. It depends on him,” Queiroz said on possibility of Dejagah joining the team.

Dejagah represented German national youth teams but is eligible to play for his country of birth under new FIFA rules which came into force in 2009.

Iran, who are preparing for their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Maldives, will play a friendly against Madagascar on June 17.

“The match will be held before our important match against the Maldives and it’s important for us to find out our best lineup,” Queiroz said.

Iran are scheduled to play Maldives on June 29 and July 3.
